USAID – Hanan Project Final Report

In the spring 2008 I was assigned to document a number of locations in villages of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip where the Hanan Project, funded by USAID, was operating. The main objective of the project was to provide support to local communities, mostly based in rural areas, in improving healthcare services and practices. Clinics, kindergartens, cooperatives and training centers were included among the beneficiaries. The Final Report of the project is available here.

Visiting remote areas near the borders of the West Bank, away from the hassle-bustle of the cities, allowed me to approach places which rarely happen to become destinations, as they are much more used to be considered points of departure. Most of the Gaza Strip, on the other hand, is a raw, overcrowded, urban context. Still, it is no less remote than rural areas in the mountain ridge of the West Bank. Meeting people and places in Gaza was like getting closer to the core of life.

Apart from the assignment, I have grouped my own selection of images in three galleries: the first one includes the villages in the north of the West Bank, that is Biddu, Burquin and Saffa; the second one includes the villages in the south of the West Bank, that is Ramadin and Idhna; and the third one refers to different locations in the Gaza Strip. Each photo is nothing but a fragment of a much bigger story. The simple, extraordinary story of ordinary people who exist and, thus, resist.
